Adventures on Rainbow Island

Ever say you want something, then get it…..except what you get isn’t at all what you envisioned?

The universe is funny like that.

For example: I’ve said before that I wanted to live on an uncharted island that I can only get to from boat. And guess what? I’m there! And it’s funny, because the details aren’t quite what had foreseen in my daydreams. I mean, does anyone ever imagine that they’d end up just offshore of the eastern coast of Florida, surrounded by an Intercontinental channel and a river? Life sure takes funny turns. I’m within 10 miles of the WWOOF farm I just left, but have landed in a completely different world. Raven and I aren’t on this island alone – we’ve joined a group of people who largely affiliate with the lifestyle we live. We’re working to make the island livable, at least for the time being. Today we found and started working on an outdoor kitchen! I’ll be glad to start composting.

It’s fun adjusting to this lifestyle, really. I didn’t think I’d so soon get used to rowing to mainland, climbing in and out of boats, or going on daily water runs. And it’s great being around people who have so much insight and advice on traveling, boating, etc. I don’t know how long we’ll be here, but I’m definitely enjoying the 80 degree weather in December! A few people were working on getting fishing poles, etc…hopefully we’ll be living off the ocean’s fare soon. Love me some fresh fish!

I’m not entirely sure why we ended up here, but I’m definitely going to learn as much as I can. Here’s to acquiring life at random! Image

About claireaudient

North Carolina girl, born and raised, though now I consider Vermont to be home as well. I guess you could say I'm a migrant gypsy farmer, if you were prone to saying such things. I've played the whole society game; I've been to three different colleges, have an Associate's Degree (in Liberal Studies, or something like that), and have worked more restaurant jobs than I care to admit. Through a curious series of events, however, I've formed a different perspective on what life means to me. Instead of slaving away at a job I hate to eke out a mediocre life staring at a shiny screen, I'm living out my dream to travel while learning organic farming and sustainability practices. It's not always easy, but leaving the comforts of routine to experience the wonders of the universe was a choice I will never regret. <3
